Did you know that the suicide rate in construction is about 4x higher than the general population and the second-highest rate of all workplace industries, according to the Center for Disease Control? Any number is too high when it comes to suicide, but it’s evident that there is work to be done.
This week, September 4-9, is Construction Suicide Prevention Week. Construction is a challenging industry to work in and workers face a multitude of unique obstacles.
Suicide can be a really hard topic to discuss and navigate, which is why the construction industry sets aside one week every September to shed light to the issue. Organizations across the industry provide resources, host webinars, answer questions, and more, all so you are prepared to have better conversations on the topic within your organization.
This year, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite and most valuable resources to share with you in a single location. Check out the links below and brainstorm how you can share this information with those in your organization.
We’re also going to share a few anonymous quotes and tips from our own customers to show how you can help and support those around you!
“Encouraging mental health awareness, emotional awareness and showing a community is always helpful. And reiterating that it is ok to ask for help is always encouraging.”
“Please call 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline if you are struggling with mental health. The line is available 24 hours a day.”
It's important that resources are available and that workplaces create an environment where there’s no judgment.”
“Be understanding that everybody is going through something and be kind and uplifting to those around you. This won’t stop all situations, but it can make a huge difference to those around you.”
We hope these tips and resources provide you with ideas on how to begin the discussion around suicide within your own organization. Please remember, if you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide, please call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
